Mean Girls at Woking Theatre – a review

by Jan

Last night we were invited to Woking Theatre, Surrey to watch Mean Girls, the smash‑hit musical based on the cult 2004 film.  Having loved the movie back in the day, we were excited to see how it would translate to the stage and it didn’t disappoint.  With its bold colours, high‑energy choreography and razor‑sharp humour, this show brings all the iconic movie moments to life in a fun and fabulously “fetch” way.

*I received tickets for Mean Girls at Woking Theatre, Woking in return for this review.  All opinions are my own.

Three girls in Pink known as the The Plastics

On Wednesdays we wear pink!

The story

If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know the story well. Cady Heron arrives at North Shore High School in Illinois after years of being homeschooled in Africa and quickly discovers that high school is a jungle of its own. She’s taken under the wing of close friends Janis and Damian, who introduce her to the school’s social hierarchy including, of course, the infamous Plastics, who are the ultimate mean girls.

What follows is a fun, heartfelt journey through friendship, identity and the dire consequences of trying too hard to fit in.

The cast & performances

The Cast, Cady, Janis and Damian

Mean Girls has a fantastic cast, who bring huge energy and personality to every scene.

Cady Heron, played by Emily Lane, is instantly likeable as she discovers that “fitting in” at her new school is not as easy as it might sound.

Regina George, played by Vivian Panka, is absolutely my favourite character.  She is just so sassy and looks stunning in all her outfits, until things go wrong at the end!  She is the ultimate Queen Bee of the Plastic Girls.

Gretchen Wieners, played by Kiara Dario, is a heartwarming “try-hard” character who is so desperate to be liked, while Karen, played by Sophie Pourret is so ditzy you can’t help but laugh.

Janis and Damian, the outsiders, have wonderful chemistry and comic timing and hold the show together from start to finish.  And of course, we can’t forget Faye Tozier from Steps who brilliantly plays all the mums!

Music, cheoreography & production

The musical numbers are catchy and energetic, with a good mix of big ensemble pieces to emotional solos.  To add to this, the choreography is fresh and vibrant, with slick group routines that fill the stage.  Throughout the show we had bright neon colours, fast scene changes that cleverly recreate classrooms, corridors, and the bedroom (all in pink, naturally).

Costumes are bold, fun and instantly recognisable, especially the Plastics’ iconic pink ensembles.

Our Review

Mean Girls is exactly what you want it to be: funny, fierce and packed with attitude. It’s a high‑energy night out that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet still manages to deliver a meaningful message about kindness, authenticity and the pressure to fit in.

Even if you’re not a die‑hard fan of the film, the musical stands firmly on its own. It’s modern, relatable and thoroughly entertaining.

The venue

We’re always grateful to have Woking Theatre on our doorstep, bringing West End‑quality productions to Woking. The atmosphere was buzzing last night, and as always, the theatre was well‑organised, comfortable and easy to access. Parking is straightforward and there are plenty of places to grab food beforehand, making it a great choice for a midweek night out.

Final verdict

Mean Girls is a fabulously fun musical with brilliant performances, catchy songs and a whole lot of heart.  Whether you’ve seen the film or discovering the story for the first time, it’s a lively, feel‑good show that’s well worth catching while it’s in Woking.

In our opinion, it’s fetch — and yes, they finally made fetch happen.
