Crunch some leaves on an autumn walk

Now, nothing says autumn more than scrunching through a pile of leaves.  And, as the UK’s most wooded county, Surrey boasts some of the best autumn walks around.

Whether it’s hiking the Surrey Hills, a riverside walk, or a stately garden stroll, you’ll find an autumn walk for you.

And make sure you leave time for a cosy pint in one of Surrey’s country pubs.  Click here for some of our best ideas for family-friendly autumn walks in Surrey.

Pick your own pumpkin

Although it’s so easy to grab a pumpkin from your local supermarket, it’s far more satisfying to pick your own.  And it’s good fun for the kids too.  Make your choice from the Good, the Bad and the Ugly!

Remember to wear your wellies and take a big bag – they can get heavy!

Here’s a guide to your nearest pick-your-own fruit farms in Surrey.  Plus lots, of them are hosting Halloween events too.

Visit a deer park

From Surrey, you have a choice of two royal parks with free-roaming deer.

With its combination of open parkland and woodland, Bushy Park provides a stunning landscape to enjoy the autumn colours.  Plus you can see 320 red and fallow deer, which roam freely across the park.

Alternatively, head to the beautiful Richmond Park, which has over 630 deer.  Autumn (September to November) is a fantastic time to visit the deer parks, as this is the rutting season.   This is when the bucks compete for the attention of the females.

Keep a good distance from the deer, as they are wild animals and can be very dangerous.  It can also be distressing for the deer.

Enjoy the Family Day at the Guildford Book Festival

Bookworms of all ages can choose from a full programme of literary events at the Guildford Book Festival this autumn.  Enjoy talks from high-profile authors, attend a literary lunch or creative writing workshop.  The Guildford Book Festival will be running at various venues from 6th – 20th October 2024.

Indulge in some forest bathing

Forest Bathing (or Shinrin-yoku) is the Japanese practice of relaxing in the trees.  Take a moment of calm to consider your breathing and immerse yourself with nature in the forest.  This natural therapy is proven to have a positive impact on your mental health and wellbeing.

Autumn is the perfect season for forest bathing and there are endless woods to choose from in Surrey.

Of course, I can’t write about autumn without a mention of bonfire night.  There are plenty of firework displays across Surrey, and they seem to get more impressive each year.  Guy Fawkes Day is the perfect opportunity to wrap up warm and head to your nearest event for an evening full of oohs and aahs!

Admire the autumn colours

As summer fades into autumn, the Surrey countryside comes ablaze with colour.  Throughout October the landscape is a riot of colour, with brilliant reds, golden yellows, russet, and orange.

Surrey has so many places to enjoy the autumn hues.  It’s hard to choose a favourite, but you can’t beat a visit to Winkworth Arboretum or Leith Hill.  Alternatively, Ramster Gardens will briefly open its gardens so visitors can enjoy the autumn colours.

Take the kids to Alice Holt Forest

Finally, the last of our autumn things to do in Surrey is a visit to Alice Holt Forest, near Farnham.

Alice Holt is always one of the best days out in Surrey for families and autumn is no exception.  Younger children will love finding the wooden sculptures on the Gruffalo Trail or the amazing adventure playground.

Older children and adults can enjoy a bike ride through the woods, Go Ape or a woodland walk.  With such a variety of trees, there’s plenty to explore and an array of autumn colour to enjoy.
